We live in a world where it appears there are no limits. We can dive to the deepest parts of the ocean or fly out to the farthest reaches of space. We can communicate with anyone, anytime, anywhere in the world. In spite of all this wondrous ability, our lives frequently feel empty and unfulfilling, like we are missing something important. But we also realize that if anything is going to change, it is up to us to make it happen. No one is coming to the rescue. That realization alone is an important first step.
So how are we doing on our adventure of self-discovery?
We recognize our situation and are determined to change it.
We realize the impact our friends and family can have and surround ourselves with encouraging and supportive people, and limit our exposure to others who might discourage us or criticize.
We prioritise proper grooming, knowing that first impressions cannot be undone.
We address health issues immediately, as poor health will affect every area of our lives.
We have ourselves prepared. Our new package is ready. Let’s dress it up and take it out to show.
I want to restate my goal as it was in the very first post: I am not seeking a specific position. I am preparing myself for a currently unknown and undescribed opportunity. That requires that I must always look my best in any situation.
There are a few guidelines to follow. Whatever I am wearing must be in good condition. The items must be clean without rips or tears. Next, they must be age appropriate. I’m not a teenager. To think that I can wear fashions designed for someone 20 or 30 years younger than me will show others that I am lost in the past and unable or unwilling to acknowledge who I am today. In a similar vein, if I wear outfits that are age appropriate but are 20 years out of style, it will show that I have not made an effort to keep up with current trends.
The next thing to consider is where I will be going. Am I dressed appropriately for the venue? If I go to an upscale restaurant wearing a tee shirt and sandals, I am not only showing disrespect for the establishment but for the other patrons as well. When Joseph was brought before Pharaoh, he shaved and changed his clothes first. When he was raised to his new position, he was dressed in fine linen, indicative of his new position.
Lastly, consider the occasion. A backyard cookout, a birthday party, a wedding, a celebration for a promotion, or a funeral all call for certain types of dress. Be cognizant and respectful of the occasion. People will notice.
My personal preference in any situation is to dress one level above the expected norm. It is always adequate but not so much that it is overbearing. I do have a personal exception to this rule though. When I go to someplace really special, I will dress like I own the place. When I was in real estate, I would always wear a three-piece suit to property settlements. That power look let me own the room and control the proceedings. Like I said, that is a personal thing. Don’t do it unless you can really pull it off.
Okay. Are you ready? Go out there and celebrate the evolving you.
What does the way you dress say about where you’re headed?
What’s one upgrade to how you dress that would match the person you’re becoming?
